The Sankofa Project is a multi-stakeholder project involving Kuapa Kokoo®, Halba, Coop Switzerland (a supermarket chain in Switzerland which sources its cocoa products from Kuapa Kokoo® farmers) ITC, Fairtrade Africa, Max Havelaar Switzerland, SECO, and DANIDA. The Project aims to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers through the implementation of agroforestry, climate smart agriculture and diversification of crops, resulting in improved cocoa yields, biodiversity, market linkages, better trade and higher farmer incomes. The Project sets out to improve environmental, economic and social sustainability of stakeholders in cocoa and associated crops value chains and its being extended to other crops and cropping systems as appropriate to contexts. The Project is currently located in the Ahafo, Ashanti, Western North, Western South and the Central Regions of Ghana.

TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR PROJECT MARKETING OFFICER

Based on the successes achieved by the project since its inception, Kuapa Kokoo® has adopted the approach as the nucleus of its future strategy of transitioning towards organic production. In support of this strategy, and to build local marketing channels and create corporate partnership for the sales of the associated crops. The Sankofa Project therefore intends to recruit a Marketing Officer to harness all the product knowledge and insights to develop a marketing and sales strategy for the Ghanaian market and beyond to ensure sustainability.


Objectives of this role
  • Establish positioning, identify target audiences, and develop marketing plans with specific objectives across different channels and segments
  • Lead the execution of marketing programs from start to finish, leveraging internal support and driving collaboration
  • Analyze customer insights, consumer trends, market analysis, and marketing best practices to build successful strategies
  • Create, maintain, and conduct analytical reporting across multiple platforms and extract key insights for future campaign development and go-to-market strategies, complete with formal proposals and recommendations on tactics

Responsibilities:

The Sankofa Project Marketing Officer will work under the general supervision of the Executive Secretary of KKFU and the National Coordinator of ITC by performing the following functions:

  • Conduct market development, research and planning activities in support of the Sankofa Project yam and associated crops.
  • Promote the Sankofa Project yam and associated crops through marketing channels and systems and awareness by preparing news releases, brochures, or other written materials and conducting oral presentations, workshops, educational materials, or tours with the Sankofa Project team.
  • Conducts market research and associated studies about market projections, trends, and conditions relative to prices and other market factors in order to determine market potentials and improve marketing prospects for the Sankofa produce.
  • Attends meetings and conferences of various commodity and farm organizations in order to stay abreast of marketing trends and techniques and to consult with organization members.
  • Recommends or assists in preparing policies and procedures related to the Sankofa Project.
  • Conceptualize and execute on multichannel campaigns across the prospect and customer lifecycle, ensuring the alignment of communications and messaging across all channels.
  • Manage content and updates for customer and internal touch points, establish budget guidelines, participate in events, document business processes, and provide sales support for the yam and its associated crops.
  • Gather customer and market insights to inform outreach strategies, increase customer conversions, and generate more qualified leads.
  • Identify effectiveness and impact of current marketing initiatives with tracking and analysis and optimize accordingly.
  • Present ideas and final deliverables to internal and external teams, and communicate with Sankofa Project Steering Committee about marketing programs, strategies, and budgets.
  • Responds to questions or inquiries concerning marketing information or programs through written correspondence or personal contacts.
  • Performs related work as required.

Required skills and qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in marketing, business administration, economics or related field.
  • Three years’ experience in a similar or related field
  • Good knowledge of current agricultural business sector
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to speak English and two or three local languages
  • Proven experience developing marketing plans and campaigns
  • Strong project management, multitasking, and decision-making skills
  • Metrics-driven marketing mind with eye for creativity
  • Experience with marketing automation and CRM tools
  • Experience in using advanced marketing techniques and social media strategy
  • Willingness and ability to travel to rural areas and interact with farmers
  • Experience in establishing contacts with supply-chain actors
  • Understanding of diverse farm practices and environmental settings
  • Proficient in Microsoft suite
  • Financially responsible
