Second Kuapa Mmere Underway Over the 9000 members of Kuapa Kokoo farmers union, and cocoa farmers who reside in Enchi, Dadieso, Akotombra, Asankragua, Samreboi, Manso Amenfi, Agona Amenfi and other nearby districts, Wednesdays 7am to 8am is the period in which their radio sets become their best friends.
The programme that is compelling these farmers to stay glued to their radio sets during this time of the day is Kuapa Mmere (Kuapa radio hour) which is broadcast at Trickie FM (99.5MHZ), a radio station located at Enchi. Enchi is a town located in the centre of Western South region of Ghana, 4 hours’ drive from Kumasi.
Majority of people living in this cocoa growing region are cocoa farmers and one is certainly right to project news concerning cocoa considering the fact that cocoa farming is their number one priority. It is therefore not surprising that they have embraced the Kuapa Mmere programme wholeheartedly. I was amazed last week when I started receiving calls from the farmers whilst in a vehicle approaching the host town. These farmers were calling to enquire whether the programme will come on that Wednesday. Indeed the number of callers who phoned in to ask questions and make contributions during the time allotted for call-ins (10 minutes) attest to the popularity the programme is gaining within the afore-mentioned districts.
Averagely between 15 and 16 callers have been able to phone-in per programme since the three weeks old programme took off on September 25th this year.
This Kuapa Mmere programme is an innovation introduced by Kuapa Kokoo Farmers Union to serve as a platform for interaction with not only Kuapa cocoa farmers, but other cocoa farmers in the regions as well. This innovation started last year in the Western North region and is currently in the Western South which is considered to be the highest cocoa producing region in Ghana. Farmers who have not yet experienced this exciting programme should expect the Kuapa Mmere team to make a stop at their region next year.
